RULES OF STREET CURLING

Street curling, also known as sidewalk curling or urban curling, is a casual and simplified version of the traditional Olympic sport of ice curling. While there may not be standardised rules for street curling, as it is often played informally among friends or community members, here are some common guidelines:

1 Playing Surface:

Street curling is typically played on a flat and smooth surface such as a local park, sidewalk or a street.

Our inflatable street curling units can also be used at the beach, in a community or school hall, or a company car park or meeting room.

2 Equipment:

Our inflatable street curling rinks require a space of 13m x 3m and access to a normal powerpoint within 20m of the play area.

Instead of the heavy stones used in traditional ice curling, players use our smaller and lighter coloured plastic Curling Rocks.

Four red and four yellow Curling Rocks are provided per inflatable unit.

Unlike ice curling, brooms are only used for cleaning/sweeping the playing surface between games.

If players are unable to squat, Pusher Sticks can be supplied. These are telescopic rods which can be hooked onto the Curling Rocks from a standing or sitting position such as a wheelchair or walker.

3.Teams:

Street curling can be played with two teams, each consisting of one or more players. We recommend 4 players per team.

4.Scoring:

An 8 game scoreboard is provided.

The highest scoring team after 8 rounds is the winner.

Like traditional curling, the objective is to land your team's Rocks closest to the target (called a “House”) at the end of the inflatable.

Points are typically awarded based on the proximity of the Curling Rocks to the House i.e., one point for the Rock closest to the House and further points (1 each) for any other winning teams Rocks closer to the target than their opponents.

So, if the Red Team gets 3 rocks closest to the House and the Yellow Team has a rock further away, the Red Team scores 3, and the Yellow Team scores NIL.

The Street Curling Supervisor is the referee – their decisions are final.

5.Throwing:

Flip a coin to start. The winner of the toss can decide whether to curl first or last.

Players take alternate turns (e.g., Red first, then Yellow, then Red etc) directing their Curling Rocks towards the House target.

6 Game Duration:

The game can be played over a set number of rounds or until a certain point or time threshold is reached.

7.Rules Flexibility:

Street curling is often played with a relaxed and flexible set of rules, encouraging creativity and adaptability. This will depend on whether you are hiring the inflatable Curling Rink for a team building or a fun activity.

8 Safety Considerations:

Since street curling is typically played in public spaces, it's essential to be mindful of pedestrians and traffic.

Our Street Curling staff will liaise with you to ensure that the playing area is safe and does not disrupt normal activities in the area.

Remember, the rules for street curling can vary based on the preferences of the players involved. The key is to have fun and enjoy a casual and accessible version of the sport.

If you're playing with a specific group, it's a good idea to establish some basic guidelines before starting the game. Talk to us about that during the hiring process.
